Come get registered to VOTE, join the Debate and submit a ballot!
In a little over a week, people all over this county, state, and nation will be voting for the next President, national & local politicians as well as propositions (like Prop 37 requiring foods containing GMO’s be labeled for the CA public). This is the perfect time for our children to examine and experience both the election process as well as debate forums. Hopefully by the end of the day, we will all be a bit clearer on how the power in a Democratic Republic (our form of government), honors the voice and choices of its people.
With the input of other parents, I decided we would debate & vote on something imaginary instead of actual candidates or propositions. Children will be able to take turns being a debate moderator and/or getting up on “a soapbox,” and sharing why they think 25 trees or a Waterslide would be the better addition to our park. (Topics to consider for debate: money, maintenance, safety, pleasure, beauty, locations, etc) There are no supply requests since it is mostly role-playing, but I encourage you to discuss with your children this week: the process of voting, debates, props and/or candidates.

M&B Parkday Debate 11/1/2012
Do we add 25 more Trees to our Park or a Waterslide?
to be followed by Voting in private cardboard voting booth
*To help with their Voter registration process, children should bring any form of picture ID (Legoland membership, Chuck-e-cheese fake ID’s, etc). If not, they can make one at the craft table. Each child will receive an unofficial Voter Registration Card. Parents will help man the registration center and voting polls.
To be clear – We do not have the authority or funds to add 25 trees or a waterslide to our park. This is purely a role-playing activity to experience the Election process.
